Spinal Decompression in Stratford

Living with ongoing low back or neck discomfort, especially when symptoms travel into an arm or leg, can make everyday activities more difficult. At Orr Chiropractic, spinal decompression is one of the therapies our Stratford chiropractors may recommend when an examination suggests a disc or nerve component is involved.

We don’t use decompression for every patient. Dr. Sean Orr or Dr. Jessica Ross will first assess what’s going on and determine whether chiropractic adjustments, decompression or a combination of the two may be appropriate.

What Spinal Decompression Actually Does

Spinal decompression is a gentle form of traction. You lie on a motorized table while it gradually stretches and relaxes an area of the spine in a controlled way, reducing the load on irritated spinal tissues.

It’s different from a chiropractic adjustment, which applies a quick, precise force to a specific spinal joint. Decompression works more gradually, with sessions typically lasting about 15 to 20 minutes. Most people find the experience comfortable, and some become relaxed enough to nearly fall asleep.

When We May Recommend Decompression

Spinal decompression may be considered for:

  • Disc-related low back or neck pain
  • Disc bulges or herniations
  • Sciatica or nerve-root irritation
  • Selected degenerative spinal problems
  • Some persistent low back or neck concerns

Not everyone with sciatica or a disc problem needs decompression. If joint dysfunction appears to be the primary issue, chiropractic adjustments alone may be appropriate. When a more significant disc or nerve component is involved, decompression may also be considered.

Your Plan Isn’t Set in Stone

A typical starting guideline is two visits per week for four weeks. Usually, one weekly visit includes both an adjustment and decompression, while the other involves decompression alone.

This isn’t a predetermined treatment package. We assess how you’re responding at each visit and adjust our recommendations accordingly. After the initial period, we’ll reassess your progress and discuss what, if anything, should come next.

Our focus is on how you’re feeling and functioning rather than making unrealistic promises about changing what appears on an MRI.

Find Out if Decompression Is Right for You

If ongoing back or neck discomfort is getting in the way of the things you enjoy, an assessment can help determine what may be involved and whether spinal decompression is appropriate for you.
